Chicago outdoor dining is a “must-try” in a city that truly comes alive during the summertime. But, in an effort to expand dining opportunities this year, several Chicago neighborhoods are blocking off sections of popular streets to give the restaurants and bars there more room to host diners. Given social distancing guidelines and limited seating, these expanded outdoor areas are hugely helpful for local restaurants, even drawing new diners to nearby locations that might not have those extra street tables. They also give diners more opportunities to support their favorites spots, and we are hoping that support can continue even as summer wanes into fall.

One street with these new dining possibilities is Wells Street in River North. The block of Wells Street between Huron and Superior Streets will be closed from 4-11PM from Friday-Sunday so restaurants can serve diners in the streets. It’s not a huge stretch of road, but the Chicago food world is making the most of it! Aside from this block, other nearby restaurants and the neighborhood in general have been adding extended outdoor dining for local foodies. If you’re planning a visit to Wells Street, here are some spots to check out for al fresco dining:

Prosecco {710 North Wells Street, Chicago; 312.951.9500}: This Chicago favorite recently updated their entire interior design for a truly stunning look! But if you’re not ready to dine indoors yet, they also have patio dining for summertime date nights. Have a glass from their famous Prosecco wine list, sit back, and enjoy.

GT Prime Steakhouse {707 North Wells Street, Chicago; 312.600.6305}: A steak night under the summer stars? Count us in! It was voted one of the “Top 50 Steakhouses in America” by the Daily Meal, and for good reason. Their extended patio space makes for a great date night spot this season.

Bar Cargo {605 North Wells Street, Chicago; 312.929.0065}: Long before the street closed for weekend patio space, Bar Cargo was inviting people to dig in outdoors on their patio. Order pizza and a few beers and enjoy the great weather we’re having right now! We recommend the Hey Pepe and The Chicago, but you can get crazy and order a whole bunch!

Avli {702 North Wells Street, Chicago; 312.643.5656}: Take advantage of Happy Hour on a River North patio! Avli is serving up delicious Greek food across the city, but their River North location on Wells Street has special deals like beer & seltzer buckets from 3-6PM, Monday-Friday. It’s the perfect way to make the most of their extended outdoor seating.

Pacific Standard Time {141 West Erie Street, Chicago; 312.736.1778}: This restaurant embodies summertime thanks to a bright design with natural touches, as well as a delightful menu of light wines and cocktails. Even their indoor tables have a distinctly outdoor feel! You can also order one of their “Summer Grilling Kits” if you want to cook at home while you enjoy the sunny weather.

Edie's Cafe {675 North Wells Street, Chicago; 312.624.9523}: From your morning coffee to evening cocktails, Edie’s has River North covered! This new addition is sure to become a year-round favorite, but their light bites are especially perfect for a summer meal.
