Light Bites and Fresh Dishes to Try This Winter

via Arami

It can be so tempting when you go out to eat to always go for the steak, a burger, or even pizza and pasta. But if you’re in the mood for something lighter (and want something more creative than a salad) it can be difficult to find something exciting. So whether you need a lighter meal before a night out or just don’t feel like eating a ton, we’ve got you covered. These are our favorite light bites right now…

Arami {1829 West Chicago Avenue, Chicago; 312.243.1535}

Sushi is always a good idea, and if you’re anything like us, Arami in West Town is already one of your favorites. Must-eats include the Saki Maki Mono made with salmon or spicy salmon and scallions or the Hotate Sashimi and Nigiri with hokkaido scallop. We love their changing specialty rolls as well!

Cabra {200 North Green Street, Chicago; 312.761.1717}

Cabra is one of our top spots in the city thanks to a creative menu of small plates and huge windows with sweeping views of the city! For light bites to share (or keep for yourself) we recommend the Shrimp Ceviche made with shrimp leche de tigre, avocado, and sweet potato as well as their Grilled Shishitos. Both pair perfectly with a Pisco Sour!

avec {615 West Randolph Street, Chicago; 312.377.2002}

Avec is a favorite of West Loop diners, and for good reason; This Mediterranean spot is known for smaller plates you can share (they have a whole side of the menu dedicated to them!). Menu items like the Seared Cauliflower and Freekeh Tabbouleh (see above) make it easy to dine tapas-style with lots of shared plates for the table.

Saigon Sisters {567 West Lake Street, Chicago; 312.496.0090}

If you haven’t had the chance to try this fabulous women-owned spot, here’s your push. Whether you need an easy dinner option or just want a relaxed place to go out with friends, this should be your next go-to. Choose between menu items like Vietnamese Ramen with either pork belly or katsu chicken or Fresh Spring Rolls with a choice of proteins for fresh meals you’ll order again and again.

Andros Taverna {2542 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago; 773.365.1900}

If you love Greek food and you love Logan Square, move Andros Taverna to the top of your “must eat” list. Tall ceilings, expansive windows, and plants galore, all will make you feel like you’re on vacation in Greece, even in the dead of Chicago's winter. Their menu includes items like Roasted Calamari, Charred Eggplant Spread, and much more, so there really is something for everyone!

Aba {302 North Green Street, 3rd Floor, Chicago; 773.645.1400}

Mediterranean spots just know how to do small bites right. Aba might have started one of those restaurants people visit for the Instagram-worthy decor, but they always return for the food. Bite into dishes like the Classic Hummus or Marinated Olives and Feta made with pickled cauliflower and onion, marcona almonds, and orange zest to fuel up before a night out or for a fun date night meal.

LYFE Kitchen {270 East Ontario Street, Chicago; 312.933.1035}

Self-described as a modern, casual chain serving health-minded food, LYFE Kitchen is a great choice if you’re trying to eat healthier in the new year. The best part? They have a lot more than just salads. Stop in for breakfast and the Coconut Banana Chia Seed Bowl made with coconut milk, chia seeds, banana, house-made date syrup, and pecan nut crunch. If you’re looking for lunch or dinner, we suggest the Lemon Garlic Shrimp Bowl with smoked paprika shrimp, cauliflower rice, roasted veggies, feta, and lemon garlic yogurt.
