Our Team’s Top Meals of 2023

via Gretel

It’s a tough job, but someone has to eat all the amazing meals in Chicago! We are out and about in the Chicago food world all year long, visiting new restaurants and trying the latest in food and drink across the city and suburbs. Someone’s got to do the tough work! And though we rarely have a bad meal in such an outstanding food city, there are some that stand out from the crowd. After a lot of reminiscing and laying claim to favorites, these are the 2023 meals that we’re still talking about in 2024…

Pasta-Lover Pick: Gnocchetti con Pesto (and the birthday cake!) from Monteverde:

This is the best pesto pasta dish I’ve ever had. Chef has you mix the pesto and pasta and cheese together once it gets to the table and it turns into a deliciously satisfying bite. If it’s your birthday, you’ll also get a special slice of “ice cream” cake, which is one of the best desserts I’ve had all year.

Michelin-Starred Pick: The Chef’s Tasting Menu from Indienne

The delicate pairing of vibrant flavors and beautiful presentation is unlike an Indian cuisine I’ve ever experienced. It’s no wonder they won a Michelin star! I’m guessing there will be many more delicious meals had here in the future!

Meal with a View Pick: The Coconut-Mango dessert from Miru

I normally stick to chocolate desserts but was encouraged to try the Coconut Mango dessert and it was out of this world! It would be a perfect last bite to any meal. The views from this spot aren’t bad either ;)

Out of Office Pick: Omakase at Sushi Ishikawa in New York City

This was the splurge of the year, but worth every cent. The mix of classic and innovative sushi bites and the quality of the fish (and caviar!) was second to none. I also loved the small intimate setting that was fun and not too “serious”.

Wine-Lover’s Pick: RPM Seafood Sommelier Experience

RPM Seafood is known for it’s beautiful riverfront views, but the true star of the show here has GOT to be their intimate Sommelier Experience. Instead of pairing a delicious wine with the menu, the food menu is crafted around the best and more unique wines they have on offer. If you love wine, you have to give this a try!

Sweet Tooth Pick: The Chocolate Cake from Punch House Chicago

I probably have the biggest sweet tooth on our team, and this giant slice was a stand out. You may know this Pilsen spot for it’s tableside punches and amazing music, but the dessert menu is worth it’s own visit!

#treatyoself Pick: The Omakase Room at Sushi-San

I love a meal that is meant to be enjoyed with those around you and the communal atmosphere here only enhanced the flavors of the stunning and delicious seafood. Every bite and moment of the meal was perfect!

Out of Office Pick: Bubala in London

This will surprise anyone who knows me given that this is a vegetarian spot, but the meal I had here when on vacation in the spring was truly exceptional. So creative and fun, and with a cozy atmosphere to boot! Add it to your London list ASAP.

Big Bite Pick: The Burgers from Gretel & Scofflaw

Both these burgers are juicy but not too messy, substantial but not outrageously big and just PACKED with flavor. Extra points to Gretel for using a layer of normal cheddar AND a layer of white cheddar. But you can’t go wrong with either!

via Kasama

Michelin-Starred Pick: Breakfast Sandwich from Kasama

The hype is so real.... This sandwich was the perfect size, combined multiple flavors and textures and was just all around tasty. I especially enjoyed the subtle sweetness of the longanisa sausage. Certainly worth any wait!

All About the Experience Pick: Table-Side Caesar Salad & Bread Service from Fioretta

Who doesn't love a table-side preparation?! Not only was this fun to experience, but also delicious. I loved the dressing and fresh parm on the salad and the variety of bread options.

Out of Office Pick: Fried Chicken & Biscuits from The Southerner in Saugatuck, MI

Only come here if you are HUNGRY because the portions do not mess around. From the Fried Chicken Platters, to Po Boys, to the mouth-watering biscuits and sides, the Southerner is ready to Fill. You. Up.
